Leave yourself an umbilical cord

(or two).

If you’re anything like me, than anything spontaneous or cavalier freaks the hell out of me. Though I don’t need like 99.9% control, I do need a rough game plan, some plan b’s and c’s and some moola stashed in a figurative cookie tin to make myself breathe easier.

So before I pulled the trigger on blowing up my work life as I knew it, I spent almost 6 months preparing while working my original job.

  • Paid close attention to expenses and hoarded money

  • Cancelled or put on hold any subscriptions or monthly billed items that were more a nice-to-have

  • Found a way to stay on with my current employer in a lesser role but on a casual basis

  • Searched for another job in my first career but also on a casual basis (in case I can’t get enough hours and might starve)

Basically, I just made contingency plans to make some supplemental income when I move out of full-time in my original career in order to do some hands on exploring other careers. I didn’t have enough to completely live off savings nor did it feel good to do it that way.

I secured a couple of ways to be able make money with the skill set I already have but don’t require the same amount of give-a-fuck as a dedicated role I was used to. Something that I could park at a couple times a week, do a decent job but can complete gtfo when the shift ends.

I needed the mind space to learn other things and fully devote myself to exploring other career options, but also needed that sense of security. Without being relatively sure I can keep that roof over my head, I wouldn’t be able to fully be free to explore.

But if you’re one of the types that can jump in head first, ignore this post.

Know that I’m jealous of you folks.
